Nasdaq Briefly Halts Some Options Trading — Update

CNNMoney’s new Tech 30 Index , which is designed to give investors a snapshot of 30 tech industry leaders around the globe, advanced 1%, with BlackBerry ( BBRY ) leading the way. Investors were somewhat encouraged following a report that showed U.S. international trade gap narrowed in November. The smaller-than-expected trade deficit bodes well for stronger economic growth for the fourth quarter. Nasdaq stocks posting largest percentage decreases

The Nasdaq Options Market was the sixth-largest of 12 U.S. options exchanges by trading volume in 2013, according to data from options clearinghouse OCC, with 7.9% of options trading volume last year. Nasdaq OMX’s Philadelphia-based trading venue PHLX was the second-largest exchange, with nearly 17% of volume. The Chicago Board Options Exchange tops the list with 26% of trading volume.

As of Dec. 31, short interest declined to about 7.580 billion shares, compared with 7.837 billion shares as of Dec. 13. Investors who sell securities ‘short’ borrow shares and then sell them, expecting the stock to fall so they can buy the shares back at the lower price, return them to the lender and pocket the difference. Nasdaq reopens options trading after brief halt

Nasdaq OMX said it has reopened trading at its Nasdaq options market after a brief halt that affected trading in stocks A through M. At approximately 11:42 am ET, Nadsaq OMX experienced an issue with options pricing data that affected one of the exchange group’s three U.S. options markets, Nasdaq Options Market (NOM), for trading in symbols A through M. Nasdaq identified that the problem was a hardware issue related to inbound options pricing data.
